Decluttering + Getting Organized

Last week I discussed being a mom entrepreneur. One of the things I mentioned was, being and staying organized. This is something that is so important to keep your mind clean and focused.

From your home, work space, all the way to your car- everything should be decluttered.

{Moment of truth} I am typically a very messy person, but now that I am a mother and have tackled on several businesses I decided it is time to whip myself into shape. So, I met up with my good friend Sabrina Serrano, who helps businesses and people like me and you organize, for a living.

Here is what she had to say…

1. Tell us a bit about you and your business – location, background, family.
** I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. I moved to San Diego 3 years ago and I’ve been loving the sunshine ever since! I’ve been organizing businesses for 9 years. It originally started as a hobby but then people I knew and worked with started to take notice. I was asked to assist in various types of businesses such as health care facilities, private practices, startup businesses and home offices. I love not only organizing work spaces but also teaching people how to be organized and stay organized!

2. What is the importance in keeping a clean, organized work space.
** In my experience, both personal and in business, when a person is not organized it stunts their growth in their thought process when it comes to reaching their goals. This often happens because they spend more time trying to sift through the chaos then actually working on what needs to get done. Most people do not have enough time in the day to accomplish all that they want to accomplish. When you’re organized, you are able to pace yourself to do all that you want to do while staying on track of your daily tasks and long term goals.

3. What products would you recommend for a work area?
** I highly suggest purchasing or creating some sort of filing system. Even if you feel you do not have a lot that needs to be organized, you still need to have an organizational system in place in order to find what you’re looking for quickly and in a timely manner. Having a system already set in place will greatly help you as your business and/or family grows because the system will grow with you!
Some examples of filing systems are utilizing file folders ( with hanging files folders ( that can be properly tabbed and placed in a drawer or a filing cabinet. Using a binder or an expandable file folder ( with tabs is also a great DIY system for your work space. I also highly recommend having notebooks, notepads and pens that you really enjoy using! Often times the best thoughts, ideas and social media posts come to us when we are simply doing our daily tasks. You will always want to be ready to write those things down and getting excited about the products that you’re using to store those ideas make it even better! I know it may seem small but having a notebook that you love to look at and a pen that you enjoy writing with can give you great motivation to want to document new ideas that come to mind.

4. Any tips on someone who may be working out of their bedroom?
** Your work space is exactly that, the space where you work! It does not need to contain a desk or look similar to other office spaces in order for it to work for you. Before I created a small work station in my home, I would use an adjustable laptop desk. I was able to use this in every room in my house. ( This helped me feel as if I had my own work station. That portable desk truly helped me stay focused and on track because I knew when it was in use, it was time to get work done! I purchased a travelling file folder to store all my personal and business paper work. It stayed tucked away in my closet so that it did not cause any clutter or interfere with my daily life. The laptop desk can easily be folded and stored under your bed or in your closet so it does not take up any of your free space.
Purchasing a great set of noise cancelling headphones can help you immensely. Not having an actual office door that you can close to get work done can be very distracting. I would let whoever was around me know that when my headphones were on, I am not to be disturbed. I know it can be difficult with the daily distractions of family and children but if you let them know the headphone rules, I’m sure that they will assist with the distraction for a little while so you can get some work done!

5. List the steps for us to start decluttering.
** Step 1 – Create three spaces where you can place items to be donated, thrown away or kept.
Step 2 – Start taking everything off your work station or out of the room that you are organizing and placing each and every item in 1 of those 3 piles. Every single item must be placed in 1 of those categories!
Step 3 – Fully clean the area that you are organizing and start implementing the new filing system that you created. Every other item will need to work around that new system. That means that every single piece of paper will have a designated space within those file folders only and not anywhere else in your work station.
Step 4 – This is the fun part! Decorating and placing your items strategically where you want them in your new clean and organized space! Have fun with it and create a space that inspires you to want to hang out in it! Really make it your own by fully adding your personality and style!

6. How can being organized keep us focused and motivated?
** When you are organized, you are no longer spending time and energy focusing on where things are or where things should be. You are solely focused on what needs to get done in order to reach your goals! You’ll be able to clearly see the progress you’ve made and the goals you have accomplished because you are organized. Crossing “to do’s” off your list and documenting monumental achievements gives you so much faith in yourself knowing that you can do anything you set your mind to! You are able to keep your mindset on the future you are creating for yourself and for your family at all times because every time you sit down to work, you are jumping right into what needs to be done. There really is no better feeling than accomplishment!

7. Add anything else you would like to touch on.
** Do not get discouraged if your organizational system does not work right away! There is no way to know if a system will work for you and your needs without trying it out first. It takes time to develop a system that will stand the test of time. Get comfortable with trial and error. There is no shame in needing to tweak or update a system that you created. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

8. What is your favorite quote?
** My favorite quote is “No business can succeed in any great degree without being properly organized.” By James Cash Penney
This was the quote that started it all for me when I first opened my business. I feel that it really applies to being organized in life as well! Organization creates the stage for success!
